Responsibilities

General Purpose:

To provide athletic training services to local high schools and collegiate institutions. To provide prevention, conditioning, and re-conditioning and rehabilitation for athletic injuries in the clinic setting under the direction of a physician in collaboration with other medical and allied health professionals. Perform services related to Injury Prevention, Post Rehabilitation Conditioning, and Performance Enhancement programs.

Specific Responsibilities:

Athletic Training Outreach services in the high school or Organization setting:

  • Prevention of Athletic Injuries: Evaluation of prior injuries and development of a program of injury prevention; Evaluation of injury rate and etiology and suggest changes in sport techniques and/or practice procedures to coaches; Consultation with coaching staff regarding sports techniques and practice procedures in view of injury prevention; Education and training of student athletic trainers in approved procedures.
  • Athletic Training room coverage and evaluation of students/athletes as arranged by the requesting high school or organization.
  • Athletic Event coverage as requested by the high school or organization.
  • Care of Injuries: evaluation of injuries, first aid application, coordinate referral to medical care; communication with parents or guardian as necessary, and the physician regarding medical care; development of programs of general conditioning during recovery; assist athlete in following prescribed home rehabilitation programs; development of procedures for a functional progression for return to participation.
  • Education: Athletes, parents/guardian, and coach regarding: conditioning, weight control, diet, prevention, and care of injuries; Coaches regarding procedures and techniques for enhancement of performance; Student athletic trainers regarding first aid; prophylactic skills and record keeping; In-service programs for coaching staff regarding care and prevention of injuries.
  • Communication: Coordination of communication regarding care and prevention of injuries with athletes, parents, coach, athletic director and physician.
  • Prepares, sets-up cleans and maintains athletic training area/room at designated high school or organization.
  • Maintains inventory and assists with ordering of supplies as needed.
  • Documents patients’ progress and response to treatments in the medical record.
  • Requires the physical abilities to observe, listen, and communicate effectively with athlete, coach, and a variety of other professional/individuals.
  • Ability to lift, lower, push, pull, carry, squat, stoop, sit, stand, walk, for emergency care, evaluation and treatment of the athlete’s condition (may on occasion require use of force in order to control up to the weight of the patient) for evaluation of strength, transfers, balance (loss of), and functional/sports status.
  • Requires ability to stand and walk throughout an 8 hour shift.

Athletic Training and Rehabilitation in the Clinic Setting:

Plans a program of patient treatment, related to diagnosis, prognosis, emotional needs or problems, patient's environment, etc., working from physician's general or specific order to:

  • Evaluates the patient's functional status and abilities and disabilities for participation in activities (Sports); applies or directs application of various measures and tests.
  • Determines types and frequencies of rehabilitation.
  • Communicates and Discusses plan of care and treatment with patient, and treatment options.
  • Obtains supportive information from other sources, e.g., family members, physician, nursing staff, etc.
  • Determines types and frequencies of rehabilitation.
  • Communicates with, and recommends to physician, others involved, modification of program as needed.
  • Requires the physical abilities to observe, listen, and communicate effectively with patient;
  • Ability to lift, lower, push, pull, carry, squat, stoop, sit, stand, walk, for evaluation and treatment of the patient’s condition (may on occasion require use of force in order to control up to the weight of the patient) for evaluation of strength, transfers, balance (loss of), and ambulatory status / gait, and functional status for return to sport/activity.
  • Requires ability to stand and walk throughout an 8-hour shift.
  • Requires ability to document in the medical record completely and legibly (either written, or electronically) evaluation findings, assessment, goals, and plan of treatment to department, professional and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Requires ability to effectively communicate both verbally and written with a variety of professionals including the patient, physicians, allied health care professionals, athletic directors, coaches, parents, across a wide range of ages and ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Provides treatments, using a variety of procedures, padding, bracing, or splinting techniques for prevention, conditioning, reconditioning, treatment and rehabilitation:

  • Renders treatments ordered by supervising physician and determined in the athletic training evaluation according to scope of practice, and to standard and competence of care requirements for New York State Licensed Athletic Trainers, including competence with padding, taping, bracing, therapeutic techniques, modalities, exercise equipment, and instruction in therapeutic procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to observe, listen, and communicate effectively with patient.
  • Ability to lift, lower, push, pull, carry, squat, stoop, sit, stand, walk, for treatment of the patient’s condition up to the weight of the patient for evaluation of strength, balance (loss of), and gait, setting up of exercise equipment, including lifting or moving weights/equipment, and supervising the patient during exercise, requiring the ability to implement safety spotting measures as required due to loss of patient balance, or control during the performance of the treatment.
  • Ability to provide manual therapies including massage, soft tissue or joint mobilization. Requires physical ability to perform soft tissue massage, or joint position with adequate positioning of body, and upper extremity / hands strength for light to vigorous techniques depending on the patient’s condition.
  • Requires ability to stand and walk throughout an 8-hour shift.
  • Recommends, obtains and instructs in the use of adaptive and assistive devices, such as crutches.
  • Instructs patient and family in use of equipment and techniques and counsels to ensure understanding and acceptance.
  • Assures appropriate safety practices and maintenance of equipment.
  • Requires ability to document patient status and progress in the medical record (either written, or electronically) re-evaluation findings, assessment, progress toward goals, and any modifications to the plan of treatment to department and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Requires ability to effectively communicate both verbally and written with a variety of professionals including the patient, physicians, allied health care professionals, athletic directors, coaches, parents, across a wide range of ages and ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Maintenance of a clean and safe work area/space, cleaning, and returning modalities and therapeutic equipment to its proper storage area.
  • Completion of medical/billing records and returning them in a timely manner for proper filing and reconciliation.
  • Current Certification if Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and ability to call for and / or render care in the event of a patient emergency.

Keeps current in the field by reading, attendance at departmental and:

  • Participation in departmental meetings (both administrative and clinical continuing education programs).
  • Participation and attendance in selected professional meetings and seminars, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training, or Bachelor's in a related field with internship route certification in Athletic Training. Master's in same or related field desirable. National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification NATABOC certification as an Athletic Trainer, New York State licensure as an athletic trainer. Requires employee to maintain all requirements required by Strong Memorial Hospital/Strong Health as a condition of employment, including but not limited to completion of annual health update, completion of annual mandatory in-service, and performance requirements.
