Position Summary: The Community College Research Center at the Institute on Education and the Economy at Teachers College, Columbia University is accepting applications for a Senior Research Associate who will serve as a lead quantitative analyst and study leader for a suite of multi-year, grant-funded projects. The successful candidate will design and lead quantitative research projects focused on the success of community college students, with a focus on practices that improve the progression of students from high school to community college, transfer from community colleges to university and employment after college. Conceptualize and operationalize the research framework and design of new and ongoing studies, including management plans and budgets; lead teams in collecting and analyzing quantitative data
Serve as lead author or co-author on Center publications (reports, briefs, working papers) and journal articles, as well as review working papers from within and outside of the Center
Develop ideas for new studies and research strands, write proposals to secure funding for future research, and communicate with funders
Represent the Center and present research at conferences, speaking engagements, and events
Advise and manage junior researchers on research methodology and quantitative data management or analysis; conduct performance appraisals
Participate in meetings with funders and other external stakeholders, and respond to external inquiries from press, researchers, and the general public
A Ph.D. in sociology, education, economics, public policy, or related field
A minimum of 8 years of experience conducting quantitative research projects in social science or education, including at least 2 years of post-doctoral experience
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple grant- and contract-funded projects, including budget, personnel, and deadlines
Demonstrated interest in higher education policy and current issues facing community colleges
Extensive knowledge of and experience with quantitative research designs and methods commonly applied in the social sciences, such as propensity score methods, econometric quasi-experimental designs, or multilevel modeling.
Experience managing and manipulating complex longitudinal data sets
Experience in drafting and revising research papers, articles, and briefs
Experience training and overseeing a research team
Excellent organizational and analytical skills
Outstanding oral and written communication skills
Track record of delivering high-quality work product under a deadline
Good judgment, reliability, and ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
Advanced proficiency in R, Stata or SAS
Travel is required.
Experience with data mining techniques.
Valid driver license
