          Job Description:

          Environmental Health Officer

          The University at Albany’s Occupational Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for keeping the University in compliance with all applicable OSHA and PESH standards.


          • Developing University policies for new regulations and updating current policies

          • Developing and presenting training programs for compliance with OSHA and PESH standards and all record-keeping associated with these standards

          • Oversight of University programs such as Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space Entry, Respiratory Protection, Hazard Communication, Forklift Safety, Hearing Conservation, Fall Protection, etc., as required by these national and state standards

          • This person will report directly to the Biosafety Officer.

          • Ordering personal protective equipment (PPE), supplying the appropriate PPE to University employees where indicated, and providing training to University employees on PPE

          • Maintenance of specialized safety equipment, such as the confined space meters and fall protection devices

          • Work with Physical Plant to insure man lifts and ladders are being regularly inspected and maintained in good working condition

          • Be in charge of coordinating respirator and asbestos evaluations, physicals, audiograms, and respirator fit tests, along with maintaining any accompanying records

          • Coordination of asbestos certifications for University employees and the University’s asbestos license

          • Coordinate record keeping for asbestos, lead and PCB samples taken at the University

          • Review employee accident and injury forms for safety concerns and make prevention recommendations, if necessary

          • Compile a yearly accident trend analysis for presentation to the Director of EH&S

          • Must be able to identify safety hazards in the field and ensure their remediation

          • Serve as a team member of EH&S and will assist other office members where appropriate

          • Must be able to effectively work with a diverse population

          Requirements:

          Minimum Qualifications:


          • B.S. in a Physical Science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene or Engineering from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization

          • A minimum three years’ experience working in the field of occupational safety

          • Good working knowledge of OSHA and PESH standards

          • Excellent Communication Skills and the ability to use most Microsoft Office programs

          • Valid NYS driver’s license

          • Training experience

          • Experience working with a diverse population must be demonstrated.
            Physical Requirements:


          • Must be able to enter confined spaces


          • Must be able to lift and carry equipment up to 25 lbs.

          • Must be able to climb ladders
            Preferred Qualifications:


          • 10 hour OSHA Construction Course


          • Certification as an Asbestos Supervisor
